The End of the Bushi's Age

Tokugawa Yoshiyobu


Yoshinobu was the last shogun in the Edo age and in Japanese history. At the end of the edo age, the government was weakened by the requirement  of foreign countries, such as the United States. This situaiton made people worried about the Japanese future seriously.


Kondo Isami


He was farmer in Tama area in Edo, but he became a real bushi. He organized Shinsengumi to maintain the law and order in Kyoto as one of the loyals of the Tokugawa.



However, the opponents against the Tokugawa became powerful and finally the Boshin War began. Shinsengumi and other Tokugawa-oriented people fighted against the opponents, Yoshinobu escaped from Osaka to the Edo Castle, leaving his loyals at the battlefield.




The Boshin War terminated with the loss of Tokugawa. After several years, Yoshinobu was forgived the punishment by the Meiji government. He did not have connection with polical arguments any more in his life.
