Famous Shoguns

Minamoto no Yoritomo

He established Kamakura Bakufu, the first government of bushi. At the beginning, he had been exiled into Izu, the part of Shizuoka Prefecture, for about 20 years. The reason was that his father Yoshitomo, the leader of Seiwa Genji, lost the war against Kiyomori, the leader of Kanmu Heishi.

Under his order, his brother Yoshitsune was very good at making strategies for wars and did well at the wars against Kanmu Heishi. Finally, Yoritomo could get rid of opponents to establish political organization.

Tokugawa Ieyasu

Ieyasu was forced to be a hostage because his family was not so powerful to compete for Oda and Imagawa. However, he could get enough knowledge in wars and good relationship with Oda Nobunaga in such a situation.

After Imagawa Yoshimoto was devastated by Nobunaga, Ieyasu had supported him. Once Toyotomi Hideyoshi succeeded to the position of Nobunaga, Ieyasu were waiting for the chance to get leadership.

Ieyasu fighted against the Toyotomi, called Sekigahara Campaign, after Hideyoshi died. Then, he established Edo Bakufu as a shogun because he won the war. This action made the Toyotomi, so Ieyasu  fighted against the Toyotomi again. As a result, he could devastate the Toyotomi.
