Background

Before Bushi Had Appeared

The origin of shogun was based on the appearance of bushi in the Heian age. From 794, the privileged around mikado, Japanese emperor, had lived in Kyoto luxuriously by a large amout of tributes. The most privileged person is Michinaka Fujiwara. He got the highest political position as the father of Mikado. Also, his son built Byodoin Phoenix Hall. This is one of the famous temples of buddhism.

While the privileged were enjoying their affluent lives, some powerful people in the countryside began to arm in order to protect their own lands. These people became bushi, and they played an important position in political arguments among the privileged. As a result, bushi got higher position than the privileged at the late of the Heian age.
