In the story of THE MATRIX, as a result of the extreme development of technology, human beings finally gave birth to A.I.(Artificial Intelligence) in the forepart of the 21^st century. Because of that, each computer program (machine) was able to have senses like humans. However, human beings made use of such machines as if they had been slaves, and then they came to be discriminated and assaulted. Since they couldn’t stand treatment like those, they rose in rebellion against human beings; consequently, the war between machines and human beings occurred. Humans thought if they had destroyed the sky and shut out solar energy, machines could not have survived. That was why they shut out sunlight by covering the sky with clouds; however, ironically, machines eventually defeated humans in the war and made use of human living energy as a source of energy like batteries. Like this, a new type of civilization started, where governors were machines, and slaves were humans.

In order to use humans as a source of energy stably, machines created virtual reality called the Matrix. Humans feel that they live in it with five senses, but actually it’s just a dream. Nevertheless, the world is so full of reality that humans can’t notice the truth.



What is mentioned hereinbefore is the basis of the story of THE MATRIX. What is important to understand the story is regarding a computer program as one of races. As is mentioned above, the world called the Matrix is a computer program in this story. So computer programs appear as human figures, but due to this, the audience is likely to be confused. The solution for this is to keep it in mind that many programs appear in the Matrix world such as Agent Smith. Especially in the following stories, MATRIX RELOADED and MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, there are much more programs in the Matrix. Hence being able to distinguish programs from humans is the first step to comprehend this complicated story.

 Probably most people who watched THE MATRIX must have understood that the party of Morpheus including Trinity, Tank, Cypher, and so on is trying to find out Neo who will save humans and release them because the party, its leader in particular, Morpheus has been believing Neo is “the One” which means a savior.

Actually there are some clues that show Neo is “the One” in the story.

1. From lines Choi who receives the data which Neo hacked

 Choi: "Hallelujah. You're my savior, man. My own personal Jesus Christ."

2. The name of the leading character “Neo” is anagram of the “One”.

3. In the near last part, Neo dies once, yet he returns to life with Trinity’s kiss, which implies revival of the Jesus Christ.

4.At the very end of the movie, Neo flies up into the sky, which appears to be metaphor of the Christ being raised to the skies.

From these factors, you must notice something. It is that the story of THE MATRIX is full of ideas of Christianity.
